Does it make a difference if you cd to the application directory before
launching the executable?

No difference, both methods are the same to OS X.

But not to the application, which checks the current working directory.

I've never had any directory issues with other applications using this method.
Anything path-related works just fine.  But just to rule out the possibility, I
tried cd anyway.  Same result.

I do see the reporter's problem regardless of working directory, so I'm
confirming the issue.

It is a smile.exe problem. I tested it under Windows and the same error:

Run-time error '53': File not found.

I attached a screenshot

--- Comment #8 from Anastasius Focht <[hidden email]> ---
Hello folks,

the app starts fine for me and displays a dialog to select SNES rom file.

Prerequisite: 'winetricks vb6run'

Many of the ROM files I tried ended with an error message "This ROM is PAL and
will not work properly with SMILE".
Some free ROM download site: http://coolrom.com/roms/snes/

Fortunately I found a few ROMs that yield "Runtime  error '76' - Path not
found"
Example: "Super Mario World.zip"

--- snip ---

The zip file from download URL is just meant to be unpacked (no installer).
The missing 'Plugins' subfolder the app complains about is not contained within
the zip file.
If you create the 'Plugins' folder manually in 'files' the app loads the ROM
successfully.

Resolving as 'invalid' -> bad packaging of app.

This is the 2.0 version of the program, the original report was about the older
version. The file is sha1 is:

f3c31b67804d2edc511983b08cc4d59564dad52f  smile.zip (578Kb).

Indeed the version 2.0 has that error 76 problem, it can be seen in the VB6
source code inside the zip. I can't test the old version in wine now, I'll test
later if you don't test first.

I can see the error 53 in wine but not in XP. But since Anyeos in comment 7
says it happens in windows too I don't think we should waste more time in this.
